Vintage Christmas postcard Ends today

Journal Entry: Mon Dec 31, 2007, 10:49 AM

All entries must be in before Midnight tonight (PST) I'll be going through and setting up judging tomorrow night.  Thank you everyone who entered, we have an awesome selection.

---------------------------------
Something that is Vintage is "Characterized by excellence, maturity, and enduring appeal; classic.". So for this contest you are to create an old, classic style Christmas postcard that is brimming with holiday spirit! This is not a contest for a grinch or a scrooge, this is a contest for those true young at heart that is filled with the holiday spirit, and keeps it all the year! This is a contest for people who love the rosy cheeked santas, ribbons and candles on Christmas trees.

You don't have to have Santa, reindeer, Christmas trees, or any of the obvious Christmas images if you don't want (you can though), but the image must:

1. look vintage

2. be full of that Christmas feeling

You of course can use references, in fact I encourage you to google "vintage Christmas" and get some inspiration and ideas, but your final image needs to be original, drawn and coloured by you.

Gallery: All Digital and traditional visual art (drawings)

Start Date: November 15th 2007

End Date: December 31, 2007 (11:59pm PST)

Rules:

1. Must conform to Deviantarts TOS and Submission Policies as well as prints TOS and submission policies

2. Needs to be a drawing/painting using digital or traditional tools.

3. Postcard must be in Postcard dimensions
FAQ #132: What are the minimum image sizes for each product?

4. Entries must be submitted to Contests & Projects> Contests> 2007> 2007 Holiday Contests> Vintage Xmas
But winning entries will need to be moved out of that category to make the postcards.

Judges:

jeriweaver, Marker-Guru, cooley, hellfirediva, fourteenthstar, Moonbeam13

Prizes:

First: 1 year subscription, your entry as a postcard

Second: 6 month Subscription, your entry as a postcard

Third: 3 month Subscription, your entry as a postcard

3 honorable mentions - 1 month sub each

What limitations are there on the winner's entry being made into a postcard? That is, will it be just one postcard mailed to that winner, or will deviant art use it as their own postcard that will be sent and/or sold out side of the artist's control.

That question out of the way it sounds like an interesting contest. I dig the vintage look.

No, you'll just get your entry sent to you as a blank postcard. Like winning your entry as a print, but rather it being just a print, it's actually a postcard as it was designed to be.

yes well that's all good except in my eyes that kinda contradicts itself, because of "digital art (drawings)" digital art, to me, is taking pictures and making them do your bidding in photoshop, and drawings is traditional art, so how can they be one in the same?

You mean photomanipulation?
Photomanipulation is different from Digital drawings.
No they have to be 100% done by you.
Photomanipulations are a no go because people are supposed to emulate the vintage look.
Photomanipulations people can just take already vintage images and piece them together.

You can have digital drawings. Its the diffference between using a pencil or a tablet

but... how can you draw digitally? lol....

oh well, I understand now at least I think..

You draw digitally using a computer.
An image drawn/painted/coloured/created on the computer, using a tablet or mouse, is a digital drawing.
In order for a drawing to be traditional, you have to draw it with traditional tools like pencils, paints, pastels.

Question ... I can't seem to submit my entry as both a print AND a contest entry ... is there a way to do both?

:iconjeriweaver:
jeriweaver Featured By Owner Nov 21, 2007  Professional Traditional Artist
No, I didnt realize that you cant make prints from the community projects gallery. =P
SO if you just make it the proper dimensions ( I linked in the journal now) then if you win you can move it out to another category and make it into a print to get your prize.

Even if you don't win, can you move the entry out of the Comm Projects gallery into another category once the contest is over?

(Hypothetical)
